Weeds Season 5: Episode 4

weeds_super_lucky_happy_s5e4cWEEDS SEASON 5: EPISODE 4

“SUPER LUCKY HAPPY”

Another great episode of Weeds! This show, I don’t care what anyone else thinks, just keeps getting better and better!!  I don’t know if it’s the writing, the acting, or both.

Continuing where episode 3 left off,  Esteban meets Nancy, and the rest of the family at the house after he calls them to say it’s OK to come home. Unfortunately, Esteban’s first meeting with Silas and Shane doesn’t go as well as planned:

Silas: “So you’re the mayor of Mexico or something?”
Esteban: “Or something, yes.”
Shane: “And you stuck your penis inside my mother at least once.”
Nancy: “Ok, then. Good night, Shane. Go upstairs.”

But, on the bright side, if you can call it that, Esteban got the pregnancy results back and he is absolutely thrilled that it’s a boy. And HIS boy. Not THEIR boy, right?  And even after he threatened to kill Nancy, Esteban starts getting all lovey-dovey sticky sweet and offering to move Nancy and the boys–even Andy into his home. Nancy seems to be good with it. Then again, what choice does she have??

I thought this episode especially funny when Celia showed up at Nancy’s door begging to stay only to wind up having her booted out with all her stuff behind.  Makes me kinda wonder why Celia wouldn’t just move back to Agrestic and just start her life over.  It’s obvious that no one cares enough about her for her to stay.

One of my favorite scenes was when Andy gets zapped by Esteban’s thug, Ignacio, pissing his pants and ends up in the garage to work out dressed like he came right out of Olivia Newton John’s “Let’s Get Physical” video.  As always,  some great Andy segments in this episode, as Andy finds a bank book hidden in a pair of boxing gloves in the garage belonging to his dead brother and Nancy’s late husband Judah.  Trying to impersonate his dead brother and get access to the money in Judah’s secret account is another thing altogether.  The bank teller Margaret he tries to con into thinking he was Judah turns out to be a former lover of Judah. She agrees to help Andy gain access to the account if he will go out with her. But, he has to pretend he is Judah.  Whack job or not, Andy will do it to get access to Judah’s money.

Shane has some serious issues this season. And why not, when his mother tried to leave him with her sister in the previous episode.  Now, he’s taken to selling pot to his English teacher, telling Andy in one particularly thought provoking scene, “I’m a Botwin. We’re not responsible for anything we do.”  Shane meets with his English teacher who plans to spend $4,000 for Shane’s pot only to have the teacher drive off with the pot and Shane penniless.  Esteban’s goon Ignacio turns out to be the same goon who caused the death of Captain Roy Till’s lover last season and while Roy decides to pay a surprise visit to Nancy, ends up being tazed, pissing his pants and drug into the house.

When Nancy realizes Ignacio is Till’s target she has no other choice but to use the tazer on Ignacio, tying the both of them to her bed.  She knows that no matter which one she would untie, they would kill the other and most likely her as well, so she turns to her Magic 8 Ball, which is no help. But thankfully Esteban arrives to check on her and he handles the situation.  What we see as a result is Ignacio emerging from the bedroom alone, leaving us to the conclusion that Captain Roy Till is no longer a threat to anyone, especially himself. The final scene was bittersweet with Nancy and Esteban walking along the beach and Esteban pitching the Magic 8 Ball into the ocean, then cutting to Andy in the final scene at home putting the finishing touches on a baby swing that Esteban presented Nancy as a gift at the beginning of the episode.

As we saw in the first scenes of this episode there is definitely some sparks between Andy and Nancy, especially when Andy asks her to kiss him when he could tell it bothered her that he had sex with her sister. The look she gave him said it all, but she just had to remind him she was having a baby.  It’ll be interesting to see who she ultimately ends up with: Andy, Esteban, or maybe no one at all??

Until Next Time!!

Happy Viewing!

Lily Allen – It’s Not Me, It’s You CD Review

Lily Allen: It’s Not Me, It’s You…

Cover of Lily Allen's CD "It's Not Me, It's You"

Cover of Lily Allen's CD "It's Not Me, It's You"

Lily Allen churns out some wicked tongue and cheek lyrics on her sophomore album “It’s Not Me, It’s You”.

Although this review is somewhat late, the CD was released on Feb. 10th, earlier this year, I didn’t know much about this artist and am very glad I did some research.

I’ve been spinning the first hit single “The Fear” and have been watching my dance floor with keen interest. It was one of the patrons in the club that asked me for a different Lily Allen song, and I had to politely tell him I didn’t have what he asked for. The song he requested was “Fuck You“, which is now officially the second single to be released. “Not Fair” appears to be the third single as it is charting on the UK top 75 chart.

Let me start off by saying how blown away I was when I heard this CD. The music is fresh, innovative and most importantly POP. Kicking off this set is the elctro groove track “Everyone’s At It“, how could you not like a song that talks “about people puttin shit up their noses.” Absolutely brilliant.

Next up is the infectious “The Fear”, already cracking my top 5 on my dance

chart, this song is sure to stay with you when it’s quite and you start humming the melody and not even realize it. The third track and single “Not Fair” is a bouncy little number that reminds me of songs from Johnny Cash. Tracks “I Could Say“, “Back To The Start“, and “Never Gonna Happen” are all good songs in their own right, but I find myself skipping to the big gem on this set, and that is “Fuck You“.

The second single is explicit sure, but it’s honest. Lyrics like “so you say, it’s not okay to be gay, well I think your just evil.” sends a positive message that rings true in todays culture. Topped off with a bouncy piano riff the sounds like the beginning of The Carpenter’s “Close To You”. I’m hoping they will release a dance remix of this very soon. The video for this song is just as clever. “Who’d Of Known” is a nice chiller song, with some cool organ synth and harpsichords planted in the background.

Sharp Witted Singer/Songwriter Lily Allen

The rest of the CD is not strong enough in my personal opinion. However I got the CD with the 2 bonus tracks and another gem similar to “Fuck You” is the very electronic “Fag Hag”. This song should get a formal release as it’s too good to just be a bonus track. Lyrics “I could be your fag hag, and you can be my gay”. Just made me have to hit the rewind button.

This CD will not disappoint, whether your working out at the Gym, or going on that long drive make sure you bring this one with you.

Nurse Jackie Season 1; Episode 5

Nurse Jackie Season 1; Episode 5

“Daffodil”

Well, fans, Nurse Jackie and staff are pulling the Night Shift in episode 5. Daughter Grace is still having emotional problems, which worries her. At work Jackie gives Zoey the run-down on night shift duties, deals with a stroke victim and his squabbling family and a ten-year-old girl comes to the ER with her Lupis afflicted mother.  The girl claims her grandmother is coming to pick them up, which turns out not to be true.  This poor girl is her Mom’s sole caregiver. Mom is admitted to ICU but Mrs. Akalitus won’t allow the girl to be with her mother in the ICU because she is underage, but of course, Jackie sneaks her in.

Dr. Cooper forms an unlikely bond with Eddie, much to the dismay of Jackie, who is in desperate need of some pain killers, but when she goes down to the Pharmacy, she finds Eddie there with Dr. Cooper enjoying a Quizno’s dinner.  Dr. Cooper confesses to Eddie that Jackie can be kinda bitchy at times, but he grabbed her boob once, and she was cool with it.  This did not sit too well with Eddie and even when Dr. Cooper explained that it was a neurological disorder, Eddie could see right through him.  Momo has an unwelcome admirer in fellow nurse Thor, and tries to avoid him at all costs.  Jackie is too busy to join Dr. O’Hara for dinner, so Zoey takes her place instead and O’Hara takes her to a 4-star restaurant, where the conversation gets a little uncomfortable until Zoey happens to mention that her father was in jail for manslaughter.

Edie Falco is Nurse JackieStephanie is able to take her Mom home, and Jackie makes sure they don’t leave without a goodie bag from the pharmacy, and her cell number in case Stephanie ever has any problems with Mom. Jackie’s stroke patient’s family becomes to hard to handle and they don’t think she’s doing enough for her husband, so Jackie makes up some notecards for the man so he can tell his nagging wife to “Shut the F**K UP! Seriously.”  Mrs. Akalitus accidentally tasers herself when she finds a taser lying about the hospital floor.  Back at home Kevin informs Jackie that Grace had a complete meltdown when her pencil lead kept breaking, and receives a call on her cell from Stephanie that her Mom was having problems moving her arm.  Jackie instructs her to take one of the Percocets (little blue pills) she gave her, cut 1 in half and give it to her with some juice.  As we see Jackie talking Stephanie through the procedure, we see Jackie doing the same thing at home, and afterwards tells Stephanie, “She’ll be fine!”

Keep it here for your Nurse Jackie recaps every week.

Until Next Time!

Stonewall Riots: 40 Years Ago This Month

Stonewall Riots: 40 Years Ago This Month

The Stonewall Inn as it looks today

The Stonewall Inn as it looks today

It is important for the LGBT community of today to understand how the gay rights movement began, and to realize that 1969 was only four decades ago. Since then our country has made some huge strides, but that’s not to say there have not been setbacks along the way as well.

Picture it, June 28, 1969 (I was only a year old then) at 1:20 a.m. This is when eight New York City police officers raided the Stonewall Inn and little did they know at the time, would ultimately give birth to the gay rights movement.

It is 40 years later. Take a look back with me at the historical significance of the Stonewall Riots.

Since the end of World War I, the Greenwich Village area of New York had been home to a sizeable gay and lesbian population. By the 1960s the city had instituted laws against homosexuality in public and private businesses, and a campaign was in effect by order of the current mayor to rid the city of gay bars. Undercover officers entrapped as many homosexual men as possible, and bars with gay customers were stripped of their liquor licenses.Stonewall20pic.14071430

Other than bars in Greenwich Village, very few places existed at the time where gays and lesbians were able to socialize in public. One of these places was the Stonewall.  The only bay for gay men in New York City where dancing was allowed.

It was a common occurrence for police to raids gay bars in the ‘60s, but the raid of the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village of New York City was not as routine as the police would find out.

Stonewall_Inn_1969.14054118

Stonewall Inn in 1969

On Saturday, June 28, 1969, eight police officers showed up at the Stonewall’s entrance and announced they would be raiding the bar. Once inside, it was standard procedure to line everyone up to check their identification, and any men dressed as women were to be arrested.  But, on this night, however, a stand was finally taken when those men who were dressed as women refused to go with police or refused to show their identification. The police quickly lost control of the situation, causing the crowd to riot.  Within minutes, many people had met outside the bar.  Most of them were gay and lesbian residents of the village.  Chaos ensued, and when the streets were finally cleared around 4 a.m. , 13 people had been arrested, some in the crowd were hospitalized, and four police officers were injured. The next night there was more demonstrations ensued. Many returned from the previous night, joined by onlookers and tourists. One witness described how remarkable it was to see public homosexual affection: “From going to places where you had to knock on a door and speak to someone through a peephole in order to get in. We were just out. We were in the streets.” Once again, a street battle ensued until 4 a.m. Yet another riot took place, after the Village Voice had run unflattering reports of the riots, mentioning “limp wrists” and “Sunday fag follies.” A mob of people took over once again and threatened to burn down the publication’s offices. This  incident lasted around an hour.  Activist groups were organized by the area’s residents within a matter of weeks, and The Gay Liberation Front was officially created within a month. Three newspapers were also founded shortly after to promote gay and lesbian issues.stonewall-riot

By 1970, simultaneous gay pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. In 1971, Boston, Dallas, Milwaukee, London, Paris, Berlin, and Stockholm followed suit. Within two or three years, cities throughout the world celebrated gay liberation.

On June 1, 2009, President Barack O’Bama declared June 2009 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, citing the riots as a reason to “commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans”.

Well, I am certain that somehow, someway, someday, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender individuals will have equal rights.

Chicago Gay Pride Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Pride Flags

Pride Flags

Sunday, June 28, 2009 marked the 40th Anniversary of Chicago’s (and other cites across the country) Gay Pride Parade.  The first Pride Parades came in 1970, one year after the Stonewall Riots of June 28th 1969, when gays and lesbians took a stand against New York City Police at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, thus starting the Gay Rights Movement in the United States and across the world.

One would hardly call the parade a parade at all when it first started in 1970. Then it was just a modest group that marched the sidewalk of North Halstead Street, shouting and calling for gay rights.  But, they returned year after year and the celebration grew and grew. So large, in fact, that it totally takes over North Halstead, with the sidewalks being for spectators. So many spectators at times that metal barriers are linked together to keep spectators at bay.

Other major cities such as New York City, San Francisco and Toronto also held their parade this day.

From Chicago's Gay Pride Parade 2000

From Chicago's Gay Pride Parade 2000

Aside from this being the 40th Anniversary (to the day) of the Stonewall Riots, this year’s parade also had the first Transgendered Grand Marshal, Chicago’s very own and actress Alexandra Billings, who remarked, “This is a great day for solidarity and a fabulous day for sequins”. This year’s featured participants, in no particular order included members of The Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, The Lakeside Pride BandChicago Police Superintendent Jody Weiss and Gay and Lesbian members of the Chicago Police Department, Equality Illinois, representatives from GLADD,  The Jane Addams Hull House, The Chicago Gay Hockey Association, Dykes on Bikes, and The Chicago Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Veterans marched, some in full uniform. As I mentioned, gay and lesbian Chicago police officers participated in the parade and it has been said that in the beginning of the parade telecasts that they not televise the officers to protect their identities, and now they ride toward the front of the parade every year and proudly televised.

Crowds danced along with performers in the parade, many of whom made statements in support of gay marriage. Politicians who walked the parade say it is a hot-button issue for the state.

Of the many politicians who marched in the parade was our very own Governor Pat Quinn, who when asked what the Parade, and Pride Day meant to him, replied, “I believe in tolerance, and I think everyone in Illinois and the Land of Lincoln understands that everybody counts. We want everybody in and nobody left out.”

Newly elected Fifth District Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL) celebrated his 27th Chicago Gay Pride Parade and said “It’s a beautiful day and a beautiful time for equality”.

pride 005State Representative Sara Feigenholtz (D-12th District) exclaimed “It’s my favorite day of the year!!” She was joined by first time parade attendee State Representative Susana Mendoza (D-1st District).  Greg Harris (D), 13th District Representative in the Illinois Legislature and a strong same sex marriage legalization advocate said he wished some of his downstate colleagues would be as supportive of the community and its goals as Chicagoans.

Nettelhorst Elementary School parents marched near the front of the parade, leaving behind a wave of bubbles. One kid-filled wagon was topped with a sign that read: “School is out and so are my dads.”

A large, well organized police presence appeared to mingle well with the crowds and reported no major problems .  Fire Department paramedics dealt with heat related issues, but thankfully for the cooperative weather and strong cooling breeze, their services were limited.Halsted merchants were happy with the great turnout and the wonderful weather.

Pride Balloon Fishy

Pride Balloon Fishy

I personally have yet to attend a Pride Parade, but have watched the coverage for the 6 years it has been televised here in Chicago on ABC 7.  The coverage is weak at best, half of the time the commentators have no idea who is marching in front of them, and the parade is never televised live, but rather late at night, and for an hour minus commercial breaks, when the actual parade to my knowledge lasts over 2 1/2 hours.  Why can’t the parade be televised live as it’s happening like any other parade?  Why bury it late at night when people are usually asleep on a Sunday night?  I guess we still have a long way to go, at least here in Chicago before we receive equal rights. Sorry Mr. Governor, but I feel left out.

FYI:  Of all the parades in Chicago, the Pride Parade is the 2nd largest parade. The largest?  The Bud Billiken Back to School Parade.

Guess I’ll be going to next year’s Pride Parade.

But, aside from that, Happy Anniversary Chicago Pride!  Forty Years and Still Going Strong!!!

Until Next Time

Alcazar – Disco Defenders CD Review

Alcazar is back with Disco Defenders..

Alcazar Disco Defenders CD Cover

Alcazar Disco Defenders CD Cover Click the picture to buy this great CD!

Since 1999 Alcazar has been tearing up Dance Music Charts all over the globe. Their latest outing “Disco Defenders” appears to do just that. This album will cater to anyone who enjoys Euro Pop. The “Disco” flare is obvious from the start with “We Keep On Rockin”.

The lead single from the album is “Stay The Night” and is one of Alcazar’s best songs to date. Using samples from “Knock On Wood”, and lush harmonies and catchy synth hooks, upon one listen, you will be putting your hands in the air like you just don’t care.

Performing at Melodifestivalen 2009

Performing at Melodifestivalen 2009

Other stand out tracks on the CD include a great cover of Lipps, Inc. “Funkytown”, to the best of my knowledge this song hasn’t been covered as well as Alcazar’s version since Pusedo Echo back in 1987.  Another great track is “Baby” and in my personal opinion should be the second single. On the slower side is “Put The Stop Down” a tropical summer sounding tune.

All in all this may not measure up to the success of “Crying At The Discoteque” but it will come in a close second. ~Nitrogen-E  Follow me on Twitter

BWO’s – Second Single is “Right Here Right Now”

BWO's second single from "Big Science"

BWO's second single from "Big Science"

BWO’s second single from “Big Science” is “Right Here Right Now”.

After the success of this springs lead single “You’re Not Alone” BWO release “Right Here Right Now”.  ”Right Here Right Now” is the lead track of the swedish hit album “Big Science” and it’s message is all about love, right here right now.bwo_big_science

The track starts off sounding like a ballad with BWO’s signature synth strings and ambient chord progression. As Martin’s soothing vocals start “Where did your love aspire,” we soon get the feeling that this is going to be a ballad. As the pace picks up at the 45 second mark, we start to get the signature BWO dance beat, and lush backing vocals. The song swells with Alexander Bard’s keyboard riff, and the song starts to lift you up.

This song is so catchy by the second time we here the chorus, then get’s a bit dark with Marina Schiptjenko‘s chant, “time is the clock of the heart”. By the song’s  end you feel like you have been to church with it’s Gospel outro. To not like a song like this, you would surely not have a heart, because as simple as this song is, it actually puts a smile in your heart.

The video for this single takes us on a strange journey. Mostly done in a grain like quality, with color scattered throughout, it’s interesting images and Martin’s good looks carry it into new territory. This video is very different from the previous one.

This remixes for this song are superb as usual with the standout mix being the soundfactory mix. I had originally decided to remix this video with the soundfactory mix, but for a different touch went with the Myon and Shane 54 remix.

Lyrics for Right Here Right Now:

Where did your love aspire
The dream was sold and you bought the bouquet
Where did your love aspire a power to behold
Caught by a sweet desire
The night was cold but love what's saved the day
Caught by a sweet desire, the torments of your soul

Loving ain't easy
You know I feel your pain
Loving ain't easy
We've been crying in the rain

I'm talking 'bout love right here
Talking 'bout love right now
Talking 'bout love right here
I'm talking 'bout love

Now when the love backfired
The dream was gold, the things have gone astray
Now when the love backfired you need to lose control

Loving ain't easy
You know I feel your pain
Loving ain't easy
We've been crying in the rain

I'm talking 'bout love right here
Talking 'bout love right now
Talking 'bout love right here
I'm talking 'bout love

Time is the clock of the heart
Time is the clock of the heart
Time is the clock of the heart

Time is the clock of the heart
Time is the clock of the heart
Time is the clock of the heart

Loving ain't easy
You know I feel your pain
Loving ain't easy
We've been crying in the rain

I'm talking 'bout love right here
Talking 'bout love right now
Talking 'bout love right here
I'm talking 'bout love

Loving ain't easy
You know I feel your pain
Loving ain't easy
We've been crying in the rain

I'm talking 'bout love right here
Talking 'bout love right now
Talking 'bout love right here
I'm talking 'bout love

Love right here, give me love right now
Give me love right here, give me love right now
Give me love right here, give me love right now
Give me love right here, give me love right now

I'm talking 'bout love right here
Talking 'bout love right now
Talking 'bout love right here
I'm talking 'bout love

This single should get a lot of attention, as it seems to me to be the perfect blend of pop and dance.

John Callaway Dead at 72

Callaway

1936 - June 23, 2009

Legendary Chicago journalist John Callaway passed away Tuedsay evening July 23 in Racine Wisconsin.  Wife Sandra says John died of a heart attack after feeling faint in a Racine store.

John Callaway was 72.

Callaway founded and was the host of WTTW-11′s Chicago Tonight for 15 years until his retirement in 1999, and wasn’t out of the limelight long before he returned to WTTW’s airwaves a year later as host of the Chicago Stories documentary series, later hosting Friday Night, a segment of Chicago Tonight that featured in-depth interviews with people in the news.

He Hailed from New Martinsville, West Virginia where he lived with his parents and sister.  His father was editor of the town’s newspaper, a boozer who couldn’t hold a job, and the family was poor for most of John’s early years according to a 2001 Chicago Tribune story about his one-man-show, “John Callaway Tonight.” After arriving in Chicago as a college dropout — with, as he often said, 71 cents in his pockets — Callaway began his journalism career at the City News Bureau of Chicago and soon rose to radio and television eminence, the story said.

Callaway later was news director at WBBM-780 AM and in 1968 helped change the station to its current all-news format. According to his biography on the WTTW website, he was named CBS Radio’s vice president for development of all-news stations around the country. He returned to Chicago a few years later and joined WTTW in 1974 as the station’s news director.

“It has been said that John Callaway, who has won more than 60 awards, including seven Chicago Emmys, is the best interviewer on television,” according to a 1994 Tribune article. “He can be tough, like when he told Sen. Paul Simon he hadn’t mastered his own campaign material. He can be sensitive, like when he delicately asked director Gordon Parks about the death of his son. He can elicit quotable sound bites. Mike Ditka, when he was Bears coach: ‘My motives are right, even if my methods stink.’ Rich Daley, when he was state’s attorney: ‘I could subpoena you overnight if you became my enemy.’ He made the Frugal Gourmet cry. When Johnny Carson asked William Buckley who was the best interviewer, Buckley answered, ‘That chubby fellow in Chicago.’ “

Callaway is survived by his wife Sandra, two daughters, Liz Foster Callaway and Ann Hampton Callaway (both of whom are singers and actresses), from a previous marriage, and four stepchildren of Sandra’s

The City of Chicago, and maybe even the world,  has lost a great journalist.

Rest In Peace Mr. Callaway

Farrah Fawcett Dead at 62

February 2, 1947 - June 25, 2009

February 2, 1947 - June 25, 2009

On the morning of June 25, 2009 at approximately 9:28 a.m. PDT Farrah Fawcett lost her long battle with cancer in the intensive care unit at Saitn John’s Health Care Center in Santa Monica, California with long-time boyfriend Ryan O’Neal and friend Alana Stewart by her side.

Farrah Fawcett was 62 years old.

Born Ferrah Leni Fawcett on February 2, 1947 in Corpus Christi, Texas the younger of two daughters. Mother Pauline was a homemaker and father James was an oil field contractor. A Roman Catholic, Farrah was educated at the parish school of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church of Corpus Chrisi.  She graduated from W.B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi in 1965. From 1966–1969, Fawcett attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she appeared in a photo of the “Ten Most Beautiful Coeds” from the university, which ran in Cashbox magazine. A Hollywood publicist saw the photo, called Farrah and urged her to move to Los Angeles, which she did in 1969, leaving after her junior year with her parents’ permission to “try her luck” in Hollywood.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Fawcett appeared in TV commercials for consumer products, including Noxema shaving cream, Ultra Brite toothpaste, Wella Balsam shampoo, and the 1975 Mercury Cougar.  Later in 1978, after achieving TV stardom, she appeared in a series of commercials for her own brand of shampoo, marketed by Faberge. Fawcett’s first TV series appearance was a guest spot on I Dream of Jeannie in the 1968–1969 season, followed by guest appearances in Owen marshall Counselor at Law She later appeared in The Six Million Dollar Man with Lee Majors, which first aired in 1974, The Dating Game, and several episodes of Harry O . In 1976, Pro Arts Inc., pitched the idea of a poster of Fawcett to her agent, and a photo shoot was arranged. The company hired photographer Bruce McBroom.  From 40 rolls of film, Farrah selected 6 pictures, marking as favourite the one that made her famous. The resulting poster, of Farrah in a one-piece red bathing suit, was a best-seller; sales estimates ranged from over 5 million to 8 million to as high as 12 million copies.FARRAH2On March 21, 1976, the first appearance of Fawcett playing the character Jill Munroe in Charlie’s Angels was aired as amovie of the week. The movie starred Kate Jackson, Jacyln Smith and Fawcett (then billed as Farrah Fawcett-Majors) as private investigators for Townsend Associates, a detective agency run by a reclusive multi-millionaire whom the women had never met. Voiced by John Forsythe, the Charles Townsend character presented cases and dispensed advice via a speakerphone to his core team of three female employees, whom he referred to as “Angels.”

The series formally debuted on September 22, 1976. Fawcett emerged as a fan favorite in the show, and the actress won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Performer in a New TV Program.

Her appearance in the TV show boosted sales of her poster, and she earned far more in royalties from poster sales than from her salary for appearing in Charlie’s Angels. Her hairstyle went on to become an international trend, with women sporting a “Farrah Do” or “Farrah Hair” and the hairstyle was even spoofed in various media, including Redd Foxx’s variety show on ABC.

Fawcett left the show after only one season and Cherly Ladd replaced her on the show, portraying Jill’s younger sister Kris Munroe.

Following a series of commercial and critical flops, Fawcett won critical acclaim for her 1983 role in the off-Broadway stage production of the controversial play Extremities, replacing Susan Sarandon in the role, she was a would-be rape victim who turns the tables on her attacker. During one performance, a stalker in the audience disrupted the show by asking Fawcett if she had received the photos and letters he had mailed her. Police removed the man and were only able to issue a summons for disorderly conduct.

The following year, her role as a battered wife in the fact-based TV movie The Burning Bed earned her her first of three Emmy Award nominations. The project is noted as being the first TV movie to provide a nationwide 800 number that offered help for others in the situation, in this case victims of domestic abuse.  It was also the highest-rated TV movie of the season.

In 1986 Fawcett appeared in the movie version of Extremities, which was also well-received by critics, and for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama.

She appeared in Between Two Women and took several more dramatic roles as infamous or renowned women. She was nominated for Golden Globe awards for roles as  in Nazi Hunter: The Beate Klarsfeld Story and troubled Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton in Poor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story, and won a Cable ACE Award for her 1989 portrayal of groundbreaking Life magazine photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White.  Her 1989 portrayal of convicted murderer Diane Downs  in the miniseries Small Sacrifices earned her a second Emmy nomination and her sixth Golden Globe Award nomination.

Fawcett was married to Lee Majors,  star of TV’s The Six million Dollar Man, from 1973–1982, though the couple separated in 1979. During her marriage, she was known and credited in her roles as Farrah Fawcett-Majors.

From 1982 until her death, Fawcett was involved romantically with actor Ryan O’Neal. The relationship produced a son, Redmond O’Neal, born in January 1985. In April 2009, on probation for driving under the influence, he was arrested for possession of narcotics, while Fawcett was in the hospital. On June 22, 2009, The Los Angeles Times reported that Ryan O’Neal had said that Fawcett had agreed to marry him as soon as she felt strong enough and was able to say “yes”.

Sadly, that day will never come.

Larry King said of the Fawcett phenomenon, “TV had much more impact back in the ’70s than it does today. Charlie’s Angels got huge numbers every week. Farrah was a major TV star when the medium was clearly dominant.”

Playboy founder Hugh Heffner said “Farrah was one of the iconic beauties of our time. Her girl-next-door charm combined with stunning looks made her a star on film, TV and the printed page.”

Charlie’s Angles co-star Kate Jackson said “She was a selfless person who loved her family and friends with all her heart, and what a big heart it was. Farrah showed immense courage and grace throughout her illness and was an inspiration to those around her… I will remember her kindness, her cutting dry wit and, of course, her beautiful smile…when you think of Farrah, remember her smiling because that is exactly how she wanted to be remembered: smiling.”

And that’s how we’ll always remember Farrah.  With a smile!

Until Next Time!

Michael Jackson’s Death Stuns World

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson “King of Pop” stuns world, death at age 50.

After letting a couple of days go by, I had a chance to reflect on the June 25th shocking death of Michael Jackson.

This celebrity death has hit me harder then I thought it would. When I found out, I was just finishing up a video tribute to Farrah Fawcett who died earlier in the day. Although Farrah’s death was sad, you had time to mentally prepare for it, after all she had been in the media for a while and we all knew she was battling anal cancer.

At approximately 4:25 p.m. CST I went to Twitter to share my link to the new tribute video for Farrah, when all of a sudden the news started flooding in, when I saw the first link I thought to myself, thats a really sick way to advertise on Twitter, then the second, third…I quickly switched to my MSN home page, and there it was. The headline…”Michael Jackson dead at 50 due to cardiac arrest.”

Still in disbelief I then checked my facebook page, and my friends were already sending in their condolences, now everything felt like a dream, quickly shifting gears to CNN live, it started to hit me, my childhood idol was gone.

michael-jackson3As a DJ/Music Producer at the age of 15,   I was already remixing “Billie Jean”, “Thriller”, “Bad”, “Smooth Criminal” ect. In fact I remember the first time I got “Billie Jean” to sync up with “Like A Virgin”  from Madonna, I was in heaven. But back to Michael’s death, could it be? would I not be able to look forward to seeing him live in concert one last time?michael_jackson

Well after I had dinner and the evening set in, I kept noticing how slow the internet was, I couldn’t believe just how fast the news was traveling. Google, Yahoo, Twitter, Facebook, every single media outlet was crushing the net with the countless speculations and stories.

Yesterday I had a chance to reflect on MJ a little bit more,  I was reminded of the time when I participated in  ”Hands Across America” I remember holding that strangers hand a hearing Michael’s sweet angelic voice after the seemingly forever minute of silence. I recalled what I was doing when on the radio they broadcasted that “Thriller” had just broken the record for how many weeks it was on the chart. Back then it was through the Casey Kasem show, and I was able to remember his words 26 years later.

Speaking of charts, I was reading on Billboard that  sales of 5 albums have skyrocketed and that brick and mortar stores can’t keep up with the demand. So next week it’s more than likely that we will see Michael Jackson on top of the pop charts more time, but this time he WILL break his own records and smash the records of every artist, making him truly the King of Pop.michael-jackson-thriller

Having all these found memories prompted me to do a tribute video, and I worked hard on it till one in the morning the day he passed away. It got me thinking though, that maybe I should do a mega mix remix and a video remix, and that’s what I have been working on this entire day.

I’ll remember these past days with wonder, nostalgia, and a sense of accomplishment. For if it weren’t for my childhood hero, I may not be who I am today. Thank you Michael for your musical genius, your spectacular live concerts, for being a trailblazer, for having the vision to create small video clips of your music that know will live on in hearts of millions and millions of fans. Thank you for your humanitarian contributions.

These are the things I hope this legend is remembered for, not all the court room dramas and strange behaviors of his later life.

To close this blog I’m reminded of a certain MJ song “Heal the World”, “Heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race.” Let’s hope this line of song stays true.
