TOTO, I HAVE A FEELING WE’RE GOING

BACK TO KANSAS!!

On Thursday, September 23, in conjunction with the 70th Anniversary of the MGM’s Wizard of Oz, theaters across the country presented a gorgeously restored print of the now iconic film, with DVD’s of it to hit store shelves on Tuesday, September 29th. The film actually premiered on August 15th, 1939 so I ask myself why it wasn’t done then, but that’s just me I guess. It would have meant more, I suppose is all.

Anyway, the real big news to come out of all this is the fact that MGM, in its infinite wisdom (or lack of new ideas, I’m not sure which) has decided a remake is in order.  Of course, no details of the plot for this remake have been officially released by the studio, only that MGM has reported the story line would be updated to reflect a modern philosophy, eliminating the hope and wonder that the classic film embodied. “We live in a different time than they did then. We live in economic uncertainty and war, which were something they did not have to deal with back then.” “The new film will reflect our times while still speaking with the voice the original sang so beautifully with.” So, MY question is, why do we need a classic film to remind us of all this?

Rumors have already begun as to who will play Dorothy, with names like Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel, Selma Blair and Ellen Page topping the list.  I’m more interested to whom they will fill the supporting cast with.  I’m also interested to see just how much of a mockery this retooled adaptation is going to be to the original.  I guess only time will tell.  I’m just hoping this is all just a bad dream, but the film is scheduled for a Summer 2010 release.

What is YOUR take on all this?  Do you think it’s a good idea?  Do you care?

Let me know!

And, Until Next Time…

Some Like it Hot Turns 50!

HOT POSTEROn March 29, 2009 a milestone was reached by one of mine and Drag Queen Diaries.com’s favorite films.   Billy Wilder’s comedic masterpiece, and the 2002 American Film Institutes Greatest American Comedy film of all time recepient,  Some Like It Hot.

The film starred Marilyn Monroe, but for my money co-stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon steal the show as Marilyn’s “bosom companions”.

Directed by Billy Wilder, who also co-wrote and produced the film, Some like It Hot also co-stars such luminaries as George Raft and comedian Joe E. Lewis. On the set of Some Like it Hot

Struggling musicians Joe and Jerry (Curtis and Lemmon) witness what looks like the St. Valentines Massacre of 1929. When spotted by the Chicago gangsters led by “Spats” Columbo (George Raft), they run for their lives.  Narrowly escaping with their lives, the two decide to skip town, only to find that the only musicians jobs are with an all-girl band who are headed to Florida.  So, they disguise themselves as women and call themselves Josephine and Geraldine, with Jerry later changing his name to Daphne.Dahpne and Josephine

They join the band and board the train to Florida, where they both fall for the band’s sexy lead vocalist and ukulele player, “Sugar Kane”, played by the ever so voluptuous Marilyn Monroe.  While in Florida, Joe “woos”  Sugar by creating a second alter-ego as a millionaire named “Junior”, the heir to Shell Oil, and adopting a Cary Grant-like voice.  Elsewhere, Osgood Fielding III (Joe E. Brown), a real millionaire falls for Jerry in his “Daphne” disguise. One night, Osgood asks “Daphne” to go out on his yacht with him, but Joe talks Jerry into keeping Osgood ashore so he can sneak on board the yacht as “Junior” and “pitch more woo” with Sugar.Tony and Jack Color

That night Osgood asks “Daphne” to marry him, and Jerry accepts, thinking he can take him for a huge settlement after the wedding ceremony.

But, when the Chicago gangsters that Joe and Jerry eye witnessed book themselves into the same hotel for a conference honoring “The Friends of Italian Opera”, they immediately recognize Joe and Jerry and after several hilarious chase scenes (and witnessing another mob hit), Jerry, Joe, Sugar and Osgood escape to Osgood’s Yacht and make their escape.  While on board the yacht, Sugar tells Joe that she is in love with him and not with “Junior”, and Jerry tries to explain to Osgood (as Daphne) that he cannot marry him, but Osgood is persistent in wanting to go through with the marriage.  In one final ditch effort to dissuade Osgood, Jerry finally has no choice but to tear off his wig and declare, “I’M A MAN”, to which Osgood, in the final line of dialogue in the film (and one of the best you’ll ever hear, in my opinion)  “Well….Nobody’s Perfect!”MARILYN

That may be true, Osgood, but this film definately IS perfect, and will definately go down in drag history. Happy 50th and we’ll still be watching you in another 50 years to come!

Until Next Time

Happy Viewing!

Dynasty – Gone but not forgotten

dynasty-season-4When I was a boy growing up, I had two things to look foward too. Music and one of my all time favorite shows “Dynasty”.

What made this show for me and has stuck with me all these 20 years later is the fact that the acting was superb.

One of Arron Spelling’s mega hits, this show still manages to capture one’s imaginations and thoughts.

I recently purchased the fourth season volume one and was amazed at how well the production held up. Yes fans like me have been bitching about how this series has been handled, after the two year wait from the first season to the second, and now that the copyright issues have been settled (paramount home video currently holds it) we have a new gripe.

The show Dallas was released on DVD and fans got whole seasons instead of the split volumes we are currently being treated to. What gives? Is paramount that hard up for money these days? I know we are in a tight economy but splitting the volumes like this is like giving a child an ice cream cone, letting him lick it once, then taking it away.

Fans like me want complete volumes, we want to spend a rainy crappy weekend with a friend, and Dynasty is that friend. What also pisses fans and myself off is that we get to hear how other countries like Australia are getting the show in complete seasons, are you kidding me? No. Australia may be one season behind us, but at least they are getting the season complete.dynasty-trio

The greatest thing that I looked for to on the show was “Jack Coleman”, eye candy, and one of the first openly gay characters on Tv. Finally the gay community had an icon on in prime-time.

In closing I wish paramount would listen to the fans in the US. Almost every single fan I have spoken with has the same view, speed up the release’s and quit nickel and diming us to death.

Enough is enough!
