aesthetic movement, Aubrey Beardsley Self Portrait As Pan Bound Tethered Design For The Savoy 1896 Vintage Illustration Black & White

In stock

' A Footnote'Here Aubrey Beardsley is portrayed as the God Pan, who's somehow found himself tethered to a post in this odd tongue in cheek self portrait cover design for the 'Savoy' created in 1895 when Beardsley was only 23 years old. This original 8" x 10.5" reprint is from 1965. It's printed on heavy paper and is in lovely condition. It's tanned just a tiny bit to a light ecru color (think pale vanilla ice cream) and it would be simply fabulous matted in a bright color and framed in either black or gold.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (21 August 1872 \u2013 16 March 1898) was a popular and controversial British illustrator and author best known for his use of starkly contrasting and intricate black and white designs and for his caustic commentary on the society and the morality of his time of which he was a keen observer. Most of his drawings were executed in jet black ink on white paper. Beardsley was clearly influenced by the bold graphic style of Japanese woodcuts. His subjects emphasized the beautiful, the grotesque, the decadent and the erotic.Beardsley was a leading figure in the Aesthetic Art Movement of the late 1800s which also included the works of Oscar Wilde (whom he very much disliked,) Edgar Allan Poe, Harry Clarke and James A. McNeill Whistler.Beardsley's contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau style and the poster movement was hugely significant, despite the brevity of his brilliant artistic career before his untimely death from tuberculosis at only 25 year old. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Matted, framed and displayed as a gallery grouping, these quirky black and white book prints make a striking statement and they are simply spectacular. (Please note that the framed examples in the last photo are to show how this might look when it's framed. Your print will come to you unmatted and unframed.)Surrender Dorothy offers an over-the-top array of unusual ond ever so affordable frame-worthy vintage and antique prints, maps, charts, sketches, diagrams, lithographs, engravings, ads, posters and illustrations of every description to adorn each room in your happy home.
